What This Means: A lot of replies sound like, “This isn’t my area,” or “I don’t handle this.” Stopping there leaves potential on the table. Asking for referrals means using that reply as a bridge to the right person instead of treating it as a dead end.

Why It Works: Most people are willing to point you in the right direction if you make it easy. When you politely ask who owns that area, you convert a “not me” into a warm intro opportunity. It also increases your odds of landing with the actual decision-maker instead of guessing.
